Native Range: Central, Southern, and West Texas

Sun/Shade: Prefers full sun; part shade OK

Flowers: Many colors to choose from: Red, pink, white, orange and variations between. Begins full bloom in spring and continues less intensely through summer becoming even more awesome in fall than spring, and so is sometimes called “Autumn Sage.”

Landscape Use: One of the most commonly used flowering perennials, used as a 3’ foot shrub substitute or accent plant.  Stays almost evergreen and looks best during the cooler parts of the growing seasons, sometimes blooming in mild winters.

Size: Three feet tall and wide.

Type: Flowering perennial, almost evergreen

Deer Resistance: Moderately Deer-resistant.  Deer may eat the flowers when stressed, but this Salvia is not preferred by Deer. Butterflies\Hummingbirds: Love it

Drought Tolerance: Very drought tolerant but looks best with regular watering.

Soil: Not particular about soil as long as it drains well and does not 
remain constantly wet. Does well in rocky soil or even better with soil enhancement.

Water: Smart Watering Principle=Water well when first planted then allow to dry slightly, without wilting, then water deeply again, etc. Easy Watering Principle= Water every day the first week; every second day the second week; every third day the third week; every fourth day the fourth week; every fifth day the fifth week. A soaking rainfall should last for about two weeks worth of watering. Do not keep constantly wet.

Fertilizer: Looks even better with regular fertilization.

Maintenance Tips: Best to cut to the ground after a very hard winter or every couple of years anyway to keep it from getting to “woody” and to keep it more full and fresh. Can occasionally come over the top lightly with a weed-eater or clippers to cut off the older flowers and encourage new ones. Wait until the awesome flower periods are finished and then cut lightly. Will respond to severe cut-back any time of year with new growth, but blooming will be delayed until sufficient re-growth has returned.
