All trees have weaknesses and strengths. In order to thoroughly evaluate a tree, you should consider both. Let me begin by offering some strengths of Carolina Basswood and then I will describe some weaknesses. You will be happy to discover that this trees strengths overcome its weaknesses! In fact, from our viewpoint, Carolina Basswood makes our "Top-Twenty" list. But perhaps, it will become your number #1 choice.
Strength: Large Heart Shaped Leaves
Like a Texas Red Bud, Carolina Basswood shows off large heart shaped leaves only on a much bigger scale. Carolina Basswood is one of those trees that is so little know and yet so beautiful. What Carolina Basswood lacks in flowers it makes up for in leaves.
Strength: A San Antonio Area Native
Carolina Basswood grows wild along streams and bottomlands in the Hill Country near San Antonio.
Strength: Large and Majestic
More people should plant this tree because it gets very large and majestic and it is also native. Its leaves also look somewhat like a mulberry yet larger. It adds a very distinctive look to any landscape making a nice contrast to our other area natives.
Strength: Fragrant Flowers
Basswood has little white flowers in late spring that are very fragrant.
Weaknesses:
This tree is so little known. It is rarely seen in nurseries.
